Captain Kevin Doran

Captain Kevin Doran

Kevin started his angling journey at an early age. The family's cabin located on the shore of Clearlake in Northern California provided the stage for Kevin to develop his angling interests. Black bass, Crappie, Catfish and Panfish were but a few steps from the front door. Almost every weekend of his youth was spent fishing for something at the "Lake". First it was worms and a bobber, then Red Devil spoons and Spinners. Maybe if mom was feeling generous on a trip into town a couple of Arbogast plugs, Waterdogs, Jitterbugs, and Hula Poppers. Small marabou Crappie jigs completed his arsenal.

By the age of six Kevin already had some big Largemouth Bass to hand. One memorable catch was a six pound Largemouth taken on a Hula Popper off a rocky shoreline in high winds and 3 foot swells. By the time Kevin had returned home to show his trophy to mom and dad the fish's tail was gone from being drug on the ground. He was off to a good start.

Kevin's first fly rod experience came about after he and his brother acquired their grandfather's bamboo fly rods, tying materials and vise after his passing. Captain Kevin's BoatWithout a flyfishing mentor, Kevin learned by trial and error and still remembers tying his first fly line directly to the arbor on his first fly reel, a maroon colored Martin lever automatic. He was not yet a teenager and had much to learn. His first attempt at fly tying back then yielded some wild looking thing with bead chain eyes that today would be right at home in his Striper box. Flyfishing had certainly piqued his interest at this point.

In his formative years Kevin shifted his focus to racing motorcycles and his fishing interests took back seat. From there it was off to junior college to start focusing on a chosen Architecture career. He shifted focus again, and from there moved into the screen printing industry where he still owns a service and sales business. When Kevin wasn't on the road supporting the screen printing industry, he was on the water. Prior to guiding, Kevin spent about 180 days a year on the Delta, the Stanislaus, the Mokelumne, the Calaveras as well as most central and north-state Steelhead rivers and Trout streams. He truly earned his credentials.

Captain Kevin's Raft

With Fly rod in hand, Kevin ventured far and wide exploring the Delta's vast waters. Being a bachelor aided in his angling pursuits. His Delta expertise comes from countless hours and over 20 years navigating Delta waters in pursuit of Striped Bass and perfecting his presentation skills on the Delta's Largemouth Bass. The Delta is world famous for it's Largemouth Bass fishing and Kevin is renowned for his expertise targeting Delta Largemouth Bass and Striped Bass on the fly. He authored "Delta Bass Tactics"(California FlyFisher April 2001) which presents Kevin's unique approach for targeting Delta Largemouth Bass on the fly.

In 2004 Kevin decided to finally focus on getting his "six-pac" Coast Guard Captain license. He graduated top of his class with outstanding marks. This was the beginning of Delta Adventures flyfishing guide service. Kevin has a deep love affair with the Delta and says he's still looking for that special woman ... but right now, the bite is on and he's got fish to catch!
