Beginning in late Sept. the fall Striped Bass run begins, continuing through March. Striped bass move up from the Pacific Ocean through S.F. bay and continue their annual pre-spawn journey into and through Delta waters. These fish are usually fresh out of the salt and are strong fighters.
By mid November the run is usually starting to peak. Initial run timing changes each year with some years seeing a push of fish as soon as the end of Sept. Other years a big push of fish might not show until late October. By early Oct. we are usually catching fresh run fish.
Early through late fall is a favorite time to chase Delta Stripers. This is mostly due to favorable weather conditions, longer daylight, warm afternoons, and usually little wind. Throughout the winter months an angler can experience great fishing with many big fish showing.
In the Spring, starting around April, most of these fish will start moving upriver into the Delta's main tributaries on their way to favorable spawning areas. Stripers from 20" to over 30lbs. are possible. Most catches will show fish in the 3-10lb class. Beginners are welcome, however, good casting skills are a big asset. Knowing how to double haul will be an advantage.
We use 8-10wt rods for these hard fighting Stripers. Utilizing shooting heads and fast sinking integrated-head lines is the primary tactic. We also use floating lines and surface patterns for catching these fish on top! We fish from our well equipped18' Boston Whaler skiff, "Samish Gold".
